Vocabulary

target audience- who is going to see the design and who you want to pull in with the design

message- what the design should be communicating to the target audience 

work ethic- is hard working, how well you get along with others, being on time, managing your time, being organized, perseverance, asking for assistance when it is needed, being helpful

employability skills-skills required not only to gain employment but also to progress within a company.
manners, portfolio, good attitude,  and how you present yourself

20/20 Rule- about every 20 minutes look 20 feet away for 20 seconds

Right-To-Know Laws- laws that make sure people who have a need/right to know information are informed of what they need to know.

icon-a simple design using simple lines and shapes hat conveys a message 

vector-based graphics- a type of graphic that doesn't use pixels and so can be made small or blown p huge with no effect on the quality 

specs/specifications of a project- what the project should have, and the basis of what message the design is supposed to convey 

dialog box (within an application)- a dialog box contains words that help with the message a design is supposed to send.

palette (within an application)- the range of colors an artist uses in a design 

guidelines- they help a designer set up perimeters in a design by using lines that are not visible unless they are created or needed. 

extensions- are added in to make something bigger or longer

contextual menu- it is a menu that pops up after a right click or some other button is pushed that shows you different things that can be done such as copy and paste.  

clipping mask- it is used to show only a portion of the design and does not delete the rest of the design only hides it. 

Hue- the shade of the color 

primary colors-blue, red, and yellow

secondary colors-green, purple, and orange

tertiary colors- red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green, yellow-green, and yellow-orange

neutral colors- black, brown, white, and gray

continuous tone image- an image made of varying shades of gray

resolution- the quality of the image, certain things like the printer need certain resolutions for the image to look good

file size- the space the image, document, etc takes up in the computer  

continuous tone image- an image with nearly unlimited shades of gray that come together to create a continuous image.

resolution- it is how clear an image is pertaining to the amount of pixels.

fill size- how much data can be held  

typography- the art of using type to create a message that is beyond the words themselves.

typeface- distinctive designs that make a type unique.

serif- a decorative line used to finish off a letter.

body type- sizes of text that range from 4pt to 12pt and are used in large amounts of writing.

display type- type sizes over 12pt that are usually used to draw attention.

reverse type- white type on solid black or dark color background.

point size- a unit of measurement that uses points to define size.

ligatures- a stroke in a typeface that connects two letters.

ampersand- a character that represents a word 

small caps- when capital letters are used as lowercase and the uppercase is just bigger capital letters, they are slightly taller than the x-height of lowercase letters.

lowercase- the letters that are not capital

uppercase- the capital letters

flush left- all the text is aligned to the right

flush right- all the text is aligned to the right

centered- all the test is aligned to the center, formal, be careful with use

justified- aligned on the left and the right

lining- numbers that have a uniform height, height of a capital letter, more typical

non lining- numbers that are lowercase size, ascenders and descenders

leading- space in-between lines of type


margin- the white space around the edges of your document, the margins in indesign tell us where to keep important stuff


kerning- adjusting the space in-between individual characters

tracking- allows u to adjust spacing between characters or lines as a whole, a whole sentence, line, or paragraph

concept- an idea, something formed n one's mind


final product- the end result, how we ultimately communicate to our audience

thumbnail- a quick sketch to get thoughts out of your mind and onto paper

Initial Cap- larger decorative capitol letters at the beginning of text or paragraph
