Ppodcast #2 Color Theory

The right use of color can do what?
Maximize productivity, minimize visual fatigue, and relax the body
Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color?
Visible light
Describe white light?
It is made of equal parts of all colors in the visible spectrum
How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"?
The object absorb or reflects colors in the visible light spectrum, we see what is reflected
What is a glass prism?
a transparent, triangular object, usually glass, that breaks white light into all the colors of the visible light spectrum
What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism?
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
Describe hue?
The color itself, each different hue is a different reflected wavelength
When does white light occur?
When all wavelengths are reflected back to your eye
When does black light occur?
When no light is reflected back to your eye
How color is perceived depends on what?
The type of light it is seen with
What is a color wheel?
A visual tool that shows the relationship between primary, secondary, and tertiary colors
What are primary colors? Name them?
Red, blue, and yellow
What are secondary colors? Name them?
orange, green, and violet
What are tertiary colors? Name them?
red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet
What are neutral colors? How can they be created?
They are colors of very low saturation (intensity), by mixing a complementary color pair
How can a neutral color help a design?
Help put the focus on other colors or serve to tone down overpowering colors
What are complementary colors? Name them?
Colors that are positioned opposite each other on the color wheel
What is color value?
Lightness of darkness of the hue
What is a shade?
A low-value color
What is a tint?
A high-value color
What is saturation/intensity?
The brightness of a color
What happens when you mix complementary colors together?
You end up with a neutral color
Describe color harmony?
Pleasing to the eye, engages the viewer, and creates a sense of order
What is a color scheme?
Harmonious color combinations
Describe a monochromatic color scheme?
Uses tints and shades or values of one color
Describe an analogous color scheme?
Usses three colors that are adjacent on the color wheel
Describe a complementary color scheme?
Uses two colors that are opposite on the color wheel
Describe a split-complementary color scheme?
Uses a color and the two colors adjacent to its complement
Describe a triadic color scheme?
Uses three colors equally spaced around the color wheel
What colors are considered to be warm colors?
Yellows, oranges, reds
Describe a warm color scheme?
It expresses aggression excitement and danger, stong and welcoming, can overwhelm
What colors are considered to be cool colors?
They are soothing in nature, they give an impression of calm
Describe a cool color scheme?
Greens, blues, violets
Why is important to consider which colors are being used within a design?
The meaning of color impacts all visual communication, color can influence whether the desired message is perceived, color creates an emotional response
